The Brill Close flood alleviation scheme is a project being taken forward by the Flooding Team to mitigate surface water flood risk to properties and infrastructure in Oldfield and Cox Green Wards.

Background

Following localised flooding to properties in Oldfield and Cox Green wards in 2007 and 2016, of a scheme to mitigate the impact of surface water flooding was identified. The flooding in this area is due to a large built up catchment being drained by limited pipework with much of the flow going through the same Thames Water drain. As such, the capacity of this pipe is quickly exceeded meaning that there is limited to ability for the area to drain water away. This scheme aims to remove some water from the pipe and store it temporarily to ease the capacity issues within the pipe during storm events which will reduce flood risk to infrastructure and properties.

The Scheme

The proposals for the scheme are to install 2 surface water attenuation basins at Desborough Park in Maidenhead. These basins are planned to be located in areas not currently being used for organised recreation and the exact sizing and shapes will be confirmed following design work.

Attenuation basins are depressed areas in the ground which store water for a short time during storms events and when not utilised will be dry. These basins will take rain water from the Thames Water pipe and store it during the storm event before allowing it to be released slowly back into the pipe. There is also the possibility for some of the water to be allowed to soak into the ground, reducing the total amount of water flowing through the pipework.

Desborough park has been selected as the proposed location for this work as in order to store large amounts of surface water a large space is required. This part of Maidenhead has very limited amounts of open space which could be utilised. As such, Desborough Park was the most appropriate location.

Next steps

The Councils design contractors will be undertaking ground investigation works on the 9th September. These works will include a topographic survey and infiltration testing to confirm the viability of soakage to dispose of water within the basin.

The infiltration testing will comprise of digging pits in the locations of the proposed basins, filling them with water and monitoring the rate of soakage into the ground. This work will happen over the course of approximately a week but may be shorter depending on the results. The pits will also be fenced off and monitored throughout the testing.

Following this ground investigation, the design work will begin. Following the completion of the preliminary designs, the Council will look to engage with interested parties and residents in the first quarter of 2025 before taking on board comments to feed into the final detailed design work.
