Consultation for the closure of the Resourced Provision at Riverside Primary School and Nursery
It is proposed that the Resourced Provision at Riverside Primary School and Nursery, which is specifically for Speech Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) will be closed by the end of Summer 2026.
Why is closure of the Resourced Provision closing?
The closure is proposed by the Governing Body because:
the special educational needs of children being considered for places at the Resourced Provision are more complex than previously and those needs cannot be met by the current support arrangements at the school. For example, increasing numbers of applicants for the Resourced Provision have autism related needs as well as speech and language needs and the Resourced Provision is not set up to address these needs.
the number of children with special educational needs that are appropriate for the Resourced Provision is low, which means that the provision is no longer financially viable in its current format.
an alternative focus for the Resourced Provision at Riverside is not considered appropriate for the future development of the school.
What will happen to children attending the Resourced Provision?
There are (as at February 2026) seven children attending the Resourced Provision at Riverside Primary School. Five of these are due to leave the school in July 2026. The remaining two children will continue to be appropriately supported by the school and the specialist teaching assistants who currently work in the Resourced Provision.
No new pupils will be accepted into the provision from September 2026 or after, but the local authority will continue to have responsibility for providing appropriate support for its resident children with SLCN.
Is there similar provision elsewhere in the borough?
In recent years the council has opened a number of new Resourced Provisions and SEN Units that can support children with complex needs, so that there are now nine Resource Bases at schools in the Royal Borough. If this proposal goes ahead then the number will reduce to eight. Further capital investment in new specialist provision in the borough is expected and there will be public consultation about this later in 2026.
What you say matters…
Parents, staff, governors and community organisations are all being consulted. Your views are vital so please take time to be part of this consultation. You can tell us what you think by:
Completing the online survey below, or
Returning it to your school, who will send it on to us.
Posting it to Riverside Primary Resourced Provision Closure Consultation, School Places and Capital Team, Zone F, Town Hall, Maidenhead, SL6 1RF.
The deadline for returning forms to us is midday on Wednesday 8 April 2026. All online and paper responses must be received by this date.
What happens after the consultation finishes?
The school and the Royal Borough will consider the responses received. If the school wants to proceed, the Royal Borough's Cabinet will then consider the proposals in May. There will be a further notice period, with a final opportunity for comments ahead of a final decision in July 2026.
By completing this consultation, you give us permission to analyse and include your (anonymised) response in our results, in line with our privacy notice which you can find at https://kr.afcinfo.org.uk/pages/have-my-say-privacy-notice.
