What is Mentoring by Business?
Mentoring by Business is a programme that facilitates local businesses to support the borough's voluntary and community sector (VCS). We work with businesses to maximise their employees' volunteering provision and support their corporate social responsibility in five simple steps.
1. We support community groups and smaller charities to identify key areas for development necessary to build the capacity of their organisation.
2. We help local businesses collate employee skills that they are happy to share with the community and voluntary sector.
3. We match a community group or charity with one of your business employees who can mentor them in the area they need to develop.
4. We facilitate workshops between your business employees and their matched group. For example, this could be up to 12 hours worth of individual sessions over a three month period depending on need and availability.
5. We support all parties with feedback and help everyone involved feel valued and benefit from this shared experience.
By taking part in our Mentoring by Business programme you will be actively supporting the strategic and leadership development for the voluntary and community sector (VCS). We aim to help them in building capacity, stability and resilience; to encourage leaders and emerging leaders to grow and realise their potential.

We recommend 12 hours maximum across a three-month period, which will be agreed with the VCS group depending on their needs.
Do I need special skills?
Anyone can be a mentor! We encourage you to log any skills you have, as a wide variety will be useful for the VCS.
Most of us have informal mentoring skills such as speaking and listening. Our programme is based on developing skills within the charitable sector, you really just need time available to give. This can either be face-to-face or virtually.
