The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead (RBWM) is host to many beautiful towns and villages. However, these quieter roads are sometimes used as cut-throughs and shortcuts. As part of the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP), we want to help communities and people adjust how non-local traffic moves through their neighbourhood whilst maintaining a good balance of accessibility for local residents and businesses.

People Friendly Streets, sometimes known as Liveable Neighbourhoods, are designed to deliver attractive, healthy, accessible and safe neighbourhoods for all people. Typically, this may involve changes to town centres and their surrounding residential areas to improve conditions for walking and cycling and reduce traffic dominance. This may include new pedestrianised areas, more seating, reduced parking provision to non-residents, security upgrades such as more lighting and/or CCTV, redesigned public spaces such as parklets and rain gardens, the introductions of Sustainable Drainage Systems (Suds), restrictions on motor traffic on certain roads or in certain directions on roads.

We understand that the success of any proposal is down to early and ongoing engagement with local communities which will allow us to be responsive to community needs and with the aim of delivering the appropriate solutions in the right locations. We hope by setting up this website including in person drop-in sessions and an online virtual session we are able to do this successfully. Some great examples of People Friendly Street projects/schemes are shown on the right-hand side of this webpage.

In addition to developing People Friendly Streets, we also want to hear from the community about areas where we can improve and enhance our street safety infrastructure, to help individuals feel more confident walking, wheeling or cycling throughout RBWM.

Are there any areas where you feel the dominance of non-local traffic could be reviewed and challenged? Would you like to suggest a location that would benefit from being more pedestrian and cycle friendly through physical interventions?
