The council is committed to making streets in our borough cleaner, greener and safer.

As part of this, four junctions at the entrance points to the Norfolk Park area of Maidenhead will be upgraded with new continuous footway features to mark the entrance point to the lower speed residential area when traffic turns off the main roads. A 20 mph speed limit will also be introduced. It should be noted that all vehicles will be able to cross these raised pavements and access them in the usual manner.

Upcoming works to modify the junction will take place as follows:

  • Junction of Cookham Road with Cordwallis Road and St Luke's Road from 21 October to 14 November 2024
  • Junction of A308 Marlow Road with St Luke's Road from 18 November to 29 November 2024
  • Junction of Cookham Road with Australia Avenue from 2 December to 12 December 2024

The new 20 mph speed limit is expected to be introduced in early 2025, alongside signs with winning designs from pupils at St Luke's School nearby.

Works at the junction of A308 Craufurd Rise, Norfolk Road and Cordwallis Road is now complete.

Consultation

We first spoke with residents and stakeholders in summer 2023, when the council hosted a 'World Café' residents event for people living in the Norfolk Park area of Maidenhead to share how they believed improvements could be made to help more people walk, cycle and enjoy time in their streets. Many residents told us that additional traffic calming, lowered speed limit and new crossing points, together with an uplifted street environment with planting, would make a difference. You can review the full feedback we received from residents at this event in the World Café Residents Event - Norfolk Park outcome document.

As a result of what you told us, the Council developed proposals to introduce the entrance point traffic calming features and the 20 mph speed limit, and consulted on these in early 2024. There was 71% and 70% support for the junction improvements and speed limit proposals respectively. You can review the full feedback we received in this consultation in the Norfolk Park junctions and speed limit consultation outcome document.

Proposals in detail

The specific measures being implemented are continuous pavement crossings for pedestrians across the roads. These will both help to reduce vehicle speeds as they enter the street whilst also reinforcing the recent Highway Code changes where people crossing a side road on foot have priority over other traffic. At some junctions, we will also create space for additional rain garden planting too, which will retain storm water and release it slowly over time, a technique used to reduce flooding after heavy rain fall.

The 20mph speed limit will apply to:

  • Australia Avenue
  • Clivemont Road (southern part of)
  • Cordwallis Street
  • Cordwallis Road
  • Denmark Street
  • Fairford Road
  • Norfolk Road
  • Norfolk Park Cottages
  • Risborough Road
  • St Luke's Road
  • Vicarage Road
