Stovell Road and Barry Avenue: Walking & Cycling Improvements - CONSULTATION CLOSED

Temporary closure of the smaller leisure centre car park
Updated 8 March 2023: The smaller leisure centre car park will need to close for one week from Friday 10 March to Friday 17 March inclusive.
The main leisure centre car park will remain open, and additional parking is available a 5 minute walk away in Alexandra Gardens car park (Sat Nav: Alma Road Windsor SL4 3HY).
We apologise for this additional inconvenience.
The consultation is now closed
The results of the outcome of the consultation are now available to view on this website in the document section titled 'Consultation outcomes'.
The Borough, with the support of local Ward Councillors, therefore, propose the implementation of the scheme and details of the activities for the street works are shown in the document 'Street works - activities and dates' also available to view on this web page.
Finals drawings of the scheme are now available to download in the document section.
What is being proposed?
To make it easier to get into town, support healthy lifestyles and tackle the climate emergency, we are looking at improving footways and cycle provision on parts of Stovell Road and Barry Avenue, between the Royal Windsor Way underpass and the railway arches.
We want to make walking and cycling more practical and attractive for everyday journeys between the town centre and Windsor’s residential areas, as well as for getting to and from the leisure centre.
We are now seeking your views on a set of main proposals, shown in Document A: Design Drawings. The changes would be:
Changing traffic priorities at two junctions and introducing raised ‘table’ features to slow traffic
Introducing continuous footways over car park entrances
Modifying the main car park entrance with alockable height barrier, and closing the old second entrance next to it which would become redundant, creating two additional parking spaces in the car park
Widening footways and straightening up foot crossings, for improved pedestrian comfort and accessibility
Slightly widening the cycle tracks under the railway arches, so they can be used by new larger bikes such as cargo bikes
We are also seeking views on a secondary proposal to investigate introducing a ‘pocket park’ with additional planting and seating, near the existing gate on Stovell Road.Because the gate restricts through-traffic along Stovell Road, closing the second car park entrance would leave 30m of street where there will be no motor vehicles needing to use it – except for access and for rare special events. It may be possible to redesign this space as a ‘pocket park’ space, whilst retaining access for those times vehicle movements are needed. Document B: Pocket Park Concept Art is an artist’s impression of what the space could look like. Note that the Concept Art does not show a final design: instead, if this consultation shows there is support for investigating this concept further, we will develop a design that is feasible, affordable and safe, and consult again on this final design.
Have your say
Please share your views on both the main walking and cycling improvements and the pocket park concept by completing the survey on this web page. It should take you no more than 10 minutes to complete.
Responses to the survey may be made publicly available after the consultation has closed but any personal information will be kept confidential. Your personal information will be properly safeguarded and processed in accordance with the requirements of privacy and data protection legislation.
The consultation is open until 23:59, 16 November 2022. Documents can be viewed in person at Windsor Library. As an alternative to this online consultation, you can submit comments in writing to: Transport Policy Manager, Town Hall, St Ives Road, Maidenhead SL6 1RF
