Out & About - Volunteers to support outing service for people with dementia providing respite for carers
Out & About is a popular service delivered by Alzheimers Dementia Support, a local independent charity.
Our aim is to provide carers in our community with planned respite, whilst providing a fun day out their loved one who has a diagnosis of dementia. The service is led by our Out & About Service Leader supported by a team of dedicated volunteers.
The service takes place on Tuesdays in Maidenhead and every other Thursday in Windsor (meeting in Dedworth). We are seeking volunteers to join our established team, supporting the service one day every other week, or perhaps on a bank basis. Currently, we have a lot of gentlemen accessing our service, so male volunteers are of particular importance although female volunteers are always welcome, as the balance changes regularly.
Each day starts at 10.00 am when we meet for tea and coffee before going out for the day on a minibus. We generally return between 3 pm and 4 pm. The day is planned and details are shared, along with a risk assessment highlighting the support attendees may need. Our charity provides all our volunteers with lunch, refreshments and covers the cost of the activity.
These special volunteers need to have empathy with people who require a little extra support due to their diagnosis of dementia, whether it is reassurance, help engaging in an activity or a keen eye spotting when someone becomes disorientated and needs guidance. An enhanced DBS is required. No personal care is required. All clients are mobile. We do not support challenging behaviour which may impact upon the enjoyment of others. The team supervise the day ensuring enjoyment and safety. We promise days of fun and laughter.
Outings are varied. Recent visits have included a private tour of The Royal Mews, Buckingham Palace, a private cruise on The Thames, Ten Pin Bowling, making up hanging baskets at Braywick Nurseries, a visit to Waterperry Gardens, a spot of Pond Dipping, a visit to Windsor & Eton Brewery and a visit to The Mechanical Musical Museum amongst many.
