Draft budget proposals 2025/26
The council is facing significant financial challenges – it needs a loan from government and more income to restore services after years of underfunding and cuts. This draft budget addresses recommendations from an independent external review earlier this year and the council’s own Financial Improvement and Sustainability Plan.
From April 2025, the council proposes to spend £127.4m to deliver essential local services. This is an increase of £36m on the current year’s budget and includes efficiency savings of £6.7m from transforming services and increased income.
These proposals will mean the council will be able to set a budget to deliver the services residents need. However, achieving a balanced budget is dependent on having support from central government to raise council tax beyond the 4.99% limit without conducting a local referendum.
