Dr Bike session at The Swan, Windsor - 10th October

Dr Bike events are designed to keep people’s bikes in safe and reliable condition.

The next session will be on the 10th October at The Swan in Windsor

Our mechanics spend approximately 30 mins on each bike, carrying out a light service and where necessary replacing consumable parts, and carrying out minor repairs.

When the work has been completed you’ll receive a report detailing all the work carried out on your bike, and any ‘advisory’ work that is beyond the scope of Dr Bike.

To help our qualified mechanics check as many bikes as possible, we ask that owners bring clean bikes in for the checks.

    We check and adjust:

    • Brakes – calliper and cable adjustment, cable, and (if necessary) block replacement
    • Gears – indexing check and adjust and (if necessary) cable replacement
    • Chain – check for wear, lubricate if necessary
    • Tyres – puncture repair, inflated to recommended pressure (psi).
    • Plus – check nuts and bolts are secure; check headset and bottom bracket; check and replace missing bar plugs/cable end caps.

To register for the session: Dr Bike Registration – Maidenhead CycleHub

Green Up Our Streets - Urban Greening Campaign

by Zoe Macavoy, over 4 years ago

Last weekend Green Earth Plan CIC kicked off their first National Lottery funded urban greening community project under their 'Green Up Our Streets' campaign. Local residents gathered on the green at Duncroft to discuss their ideas and agree how they would like to use this space to benefit both people and the planet.

The 'Green Up Duncroft' plans have been drafted and once final, they will be submitted to the council for approval under a new green space community adoption scheme that Green Earth Plan has been developing alongside the RBWM's sustainability team for several months.

The 'Green Up Duncroft' plans have been drafted and once final, they will be submitted to the council for approval under a new green space community adoption scheme that Green Earth Plan has been developing alongside the RBWM's sustainability team for several months.

We hope to start planting this autumn before the weather turns and allow new trees, shrubs and bulbs to settle in over the winter months for a nice display in spring and early summer!

The kick-starter funding will support up to 10 Green Up Our Street community projects in Windsor initially, with the aim to attract additional funding to expand across RBWM.

Thank you to local resident John Webb for taking on the role as Duncroft's community lead and to Councillor Helen Price for her continuous support and belief in this community driven initiative across the Clewer & Dedworth East Ward of Windsor. We would also like to thank RBWM's Transformation team and Cllr. Samantha Rayner for their encouragement and support along the way.

If you would like to find out more about adopting a green space or joining this pilot project, please email hello@greenearthplan.org for more information or visit www.greenearthplan.org

Maidenhead Cycle Hub & The Windsor Homeless Project

Maidenhead Cycle Hub is proud to work with RBWM and The Windsor Homeless Project to give bikes to homeless people. Because our borough is geographically spread out, our local council cannot always find housing for homeless people where they normally reside. Cycle Hub’s bikes have proved to be an excellent solution to allow homeless people travel independently and continue to access council services, their social groups, and find work further afield.

"The idea of joining up with Cycle Hub came about as more of our guests were being placed into accommodation outside of the Windsor area. With bus and train fares expensive for people on low income, being able to have the use of a bicycle to access the Project, or other support services is great, plus a little exercise too. It also makes use of bikes which may have been discarded so it helps to keep things green!”

I work for Community Learning and Skills (CLaSS) within The Royal Borough. We are an adult learning provider (19+ years old) and we offer a range of classes and courses that help to get people into work and upskill individuals so they can take part in everyday life. We also offer development courses for organisations from the private, voluntary and independent sector . All courses run by CLaSS are tailored to meet local needs and demand.

I am delighted to be involved in this very exciting initiative. As part of our activity associated with the project we have worked with a large number of organisations in the Clewer and Dedworth area to support them with volunteering recruitment and training and to co-design/deliver adult learning courses for those within the community. I am also helping organisations to capacity build to support them to deliver even more services in the community.

By working with residents and local organisations, we can best understand the local learning aspirations and needs; we can then create courses to match these whilst also achieving Council agendas and priorities

Established in 1999, Mikkom is a Windsor-based software development company who specialises in producing innovative and highly secure patient booking, messaging and information exchange software, for the NHS and other international “Blue-chip” healthcare organisations. At the start of the pandemic, Mikkom modified and deployed one of its systems free of charge, to provide much needed automation to facilitate how local volunteers could meet the needs of our vulnerable West Windsor community. Its most recent work was to provide assistance to the Maidenhead Cycle Hub, who required some technical guidance and support for reconstructing their website.

I have lived in Clewer & Dedworth East for over 20 years, I worked in the community as a community midwife at Dedworth Medical Centre.

I was involved in establishing the West Windsor Hub in March 2020 in response to the national lockdown due to COVID-19. The community hub offered help and support to those who were shielding or unable to get out for their essentials easily. The volunteers from the hub offer shopping services, prescription services, emergency food bags and boxes with recipe cards, food-packs during the school holidays for children, healthy snack packs, as well as providing extra... The volunteers from the hub offer shopping services, prescription services, emergency food bags and boxes with recipe cards, food-packs during the school holidays for children, healthy snack packs, as well as providing extra food provisions through surplus to families.

I wanted to get involved in the project due to my strong links with the community and my work at the West Windsor Hub. I know the community well as its where I live and work, its where my passion and heart is. Through the project we can build a better community for those that have a lesser start in life and break the cycle of deprivation and give people better life chances so they can be everything they can be.

I represent the West Windsor Hub in the local Food Network. Through the network the West Windsor Hub has been contacted with other charitable food organisations locally and together we work towards addressing the local food need and to avoid duplication.

Working in partnership with local organisations through the project has provided a platform of information sharing. This offers a richer quality of information which provides great insight into the community and local area. This insight has contributed to the development of the C&D pilot project. I have been able to provide crucial insight about health and wellbeing needs locally. The insight each organisation has contributed has given the project group an opportunity to highlight local determinants of primary care which can’t traditionally be resolved through primary care, such as environmental factors, isolation and loneliness, learning, training, skills and help with... I have been able to provide crucial insight about health and wellbeing needs locally. The insight each organisation has contributed has given the project group an opportunity to highlight local determinants of primary care which can’t traditionally be resolved through primary care, such as environmental factors, isolation and loneliness, learning, training, skills and help with employment. Tackling these factors and addressing health inequalities will improve health and wellbeing indicators for patients and prevent the need for primary care.

Further to this being involved in the project with other local organisations has helped the PCN understand what services are available in the community such as employment and skills support. This knowledge provides a richer consultation with patients in terms of conversation which adds another dimension to care, as well as leading to prevention for primary care in the future.

The pandemic has enhanced greater community spirit and has brought the community together to support vulnerable individuals. This has built capacity into the primary care service as the local community are starting to address health and wellbeing demand at a community level, this shows real potential. As a result of the cooperation of the whole community we had an army of volunteers come forwards to help with the vaccination programme.

The work of those involved in the physical environment project group will be very beneficial to the community but will also deliver on the councils Environment and Climate Strategy at a community level. This is encouraging to see as the natural environment is so closely linked to the community’s general health and well-being.

We contacted each one regarding the project and asked them to get involved.

These organisations were already doing great work with young people in the community and YES have supported a few of these organisations further to apply for funding and develop their services.

By connecting these organisations together, they have successfully created a central programme of activities and workshops for young people which can be easily accessed by the community. The activities and workshops are engaging, fun and educational whilst helping to increase confidence and learning key skills.
