    Soup Project - January

by LornaHS, over 3 years ago
In January we held another 2 soup sessions and were joined by around 12 residents. We now have a regaulr group of volunteers joining us which is great!

The residents are all really enjoying taking part, and not only enjoying the soup but meeting new people and visiting different places as well. Following on from a january session one resident has bought himself a soup maker and is already making his own soups! Another has tried the one left at the scheme and loved how easy it was to use.

    Chair Yoga Update

by UnwindYS, over 3 years ago
Hello - we are continuing out chair yoga (yoga for people with limited mobility) and have gained a couple of new participants. It has been slower this month, with participants not coming out as much when it is cold or icy or raining, but when the sun is out, people do show up happily, so we are hoping to fill every chair again soon (as spring is on the way, promise!).

by DaveScarbrough, over 3 years ago

DraughtBusters will fix the draughts in your home for FREE so you should feel warmer and spend less money on your heating.

This a service offered by local residents for local residents. Draughty homes can feel cold and increase the energy required to heat them. Through DraughtBusters, a trained resident will come and survey your property and undertake basic draughtproofing. This will save you money, make your home feel more comfortable and reduce carbon emissions.

DraughtBusters are so popular because of the huge rise in energy prices we need some more helpers. Anyone can be a DraughtBuster as full training is given.

If want a visit to fix your draughts, or, you can help others then please email rbwmdraughtbusters@gmail.com or phone 07548 594413 and leave a message.

Our clients are always very grateful. As an example last December Helen from Windsor said "I just wanted to say a HUGE 'thank you' to your volunteers for the insulation they added to my home yesterday. I can really notice a difference and they did a superb and professional job. I am most grateful to them, and you for organising. Thank you again!"

Another example from February 2023 "Andrew and Mike were so kind & helpful. As two women staying on our own, we felt so safe with them around."

Another from April 2023 "It was a delight to meet Neville & Chris and to benefit from their expertise, both in terms of advice and of their very practical DIY skills - they paid a second visit, mutually arranged, having recommended that I invest in a new letterbox, which they were happy to source and then fit!

I can’t thank them - and you – enough for the care and concern you showed from the moment I contacted you. I have already told my neighbours, who are extremely impressed and who will, no doubt, be in touch with you !! …

I am so grateful that Neville and Chris (both of whom were courteous, kind, efficient and a pleasure to have in my home) were able to do so much to secure my comfort in my older-style property."

    Savvy Slow Cooking

by Danielle, over 3 years ago

Today saw the start of the Savvy Slow Cooking Course, the course was fully booked and people attended to watch the preparation of a Chilli bean chilli for the slow cooker. The tutor discussed safe freezing, and re-heating of food and how to adjust recipes to taste and the size of a household.

Everyone that attended asked lots of questions, tips were shared and a bag with all the ingredients taken home to try out themselves.

We look forward to learning more next week!

We have fun on most Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays getting together for a chat and catch up over coffee, tea and biscuits. There may not be many of us but those who join have fun and it’s nice to be together in the warmth! When we learn how to upload pictures we’ll do so!

    New Year Mobility Yoga Continues

by UnwindYS, over 3 years ago
Hello - we have been back a few weeks and whilst we had a few cancellations yesterday as it was so icy and that is tricky for people with limited mobility, we still had a nice group of regulars attend their mobility yoga class. The good thing was that the people who called to cancel were so sad to miss the class - and that's good, because it's an indication of how much they like coming and dislike missing classes.

Some of our students have made real progress from only doing chair based movements to practising getting off the chair without help or using their hands - really difficult if for years you have conditioned yourself and your body to not use core muscles and leg muscles in that situation. So that's excellent progress, and we have given people some gentle and safe "homework", too.

Hope everyone has a good start to 2023!

    Soup Project - December 2022

by LornaHS, over 3 years ago

We took our soup project to two new schemes in December within Woodlands Park and Belmont. Both went really well and those that came along to Woodlands park are already looking forward to the next one! 10 people came along and there was lots of soup to take away as well.

Our Belmont outing coincided with the world cafe which provided extra support for those residents attending and they particularly appreciated the warm packs from the Green Doctor.

After months of trying have recently received permission to use the Environmental Agencies Sign Posts at Boulters Lock to mount my Boundary Walk Information Board.

They not however happy to use the 4 snap lock type of public posters locations on the back of the Board - so I redesigned it so it would not involve any maintenance at all.

I used Michael Bayley's historical map of Maidenhead as the back information.

I worked with Neil Savin and the Civic Society and the East Berks Ramblers - to discover the history of the Boundary Walk - and have produced an updated version of a 1982 ramblers booklet.

The ramblers in 1982 used the walk as the seed corn for a number of short walks using the Boundary as the start point for each walk.

I will endeavour to update those walks - and make them available to the public,

Neil Savin (a boundary stone hunting colleague) has located 30 of the boundary stones by actually probing for and digging around to find four of them. The Borough bought 48 stones in 1934 for 7 shillings and 6 pence each- so its a mystery where the rest of the stones have gone?

I have reflected the known stone locations in the new Boundary Walk map.

Next actions - to obtain RBWM permission to install and to print out the Info Boards on an 5mm Aluminium substrate and spray with anti-graffitti spray.

Then in order to match the existing fixings on the nearby Environment Agency signs - mount the boards on 9mm marine plywood (cutting the plywood to the size of the boards).

Then need to remove the redundant perspex boxes at the back of the sign posts and the locked box at the front of the sign.

Then screwing the new sign boards on the Sign Posts -

I could take the opportunity to renew the staining on the sign post - might experiment with a clear stain - so that the post is just weatherised and does not look too different - so that it matches the existing sign posts.
