Maidenhead Tai Chi Community Group - Developing a Tai Chi Push Hands Program for Community Health
by MaidenheadTaiChiCommunityGroup, 3 months ago
The Maidenhead Tai Chi Community Group has been delivering free weekly Tai Chi sessions to local residents, creating an accessible and supportive environment for people to improve their health and well-being through gentle, structured movement.
The program was established to serve the community with particular attention to older adults and those experiencing age-related health challenges, offering a safe and sustainable form of physical activity. Participants have already reported meaningful improvements in cardiovascular health, flexibility, coordination, balance, and emotional well-being through regular solo Tai Chi practice.

However, most Tai Chi instruction currently available locally focuses on individual forms and exercises, which, while highly beneficial, do not fully address the interactive training elements found in traditional partner work. Introducing a dedicated Tai Chi Push Hands class would expand the program by adding a partner-based component that develops sensitivity, balance, reflexes, posture, and social connection through guided cooperative practice. This addition would strengthen the overall impact of the community Tai Chi offering by providing a more complete and holistic approach to health, movement, and interpersonal engagement.

Oaken Grove Park - Flower Bed Planting
by Dave Duncan, 5 months ago
Today (Monday Dec 8th 2025) a group of 7 from Wild Maidenhead and Friends of Oaken Grove Park planted over 40 plants (kindly donated by Rachel Cooke) in the Flower bed. These were surrounded by cardboard with wood chip mulch on to top to help keep the grass down. Should make a lovely display come the Spring!

Oaken Grove Park - Revamp of Wild Flower Beds - Nov 2025
by Dave Duncan, 5 months ago
On Saturday 22nd November a group pf about 8 volunteers from Friends of Oaken Grove Park, Good Gym and Wild Maidenhead started the revamp of the wild flower bed on the north of the park. Many plants were lifted and moved, new plants added and wood chip distributed to suppress weeds. Also a Turf Cutter was hired to remove as much of the grass as possible and create a good flower bed where the grass wouldn't out complete the flowers. Additional planting and maintenance over the winter should result in a lovely display next year!

Oaken Grove Park - 43 Acorns Planted!
by Dave Duncan, 7 months agoToday (4th Oct 2025) we planted 43 Acorns in the borders in the west of the park near the basket ball courts. These acorns were collected from ancient oaks and the hope is that they germinate over the winter and start their journey growing into beautiful mature oak trees that will look lovely and provide a home for lots of biodiverse wildlife. Once mature they will form an actual grove of Oak trees in Oaken Grove Park! The acorns were planted in groups of three or four within protective biodegradable trees guards. Oaken Grove Park - New Sir Nicholas Winton Explainer Board
by Dave Duncan, 8 months ago
We (Friends of Oaken Grove Park) were asked by RBWM if we could do anything about remounting one of the Explainer Boards in the Sir Nicholas Winton Garden whose wooden frame had rotted. The Explainer Board had been tossed in the pond! We recovered the Explainer Board and working with a local light engineering company we remounted the board in a solid metal frame, repainted it and re-installed it. It should last for years now! Since re-installing it we have seen people stopping and reading about Sir Nicholas and his Teams good work! :-) Please see the photo attached of... Continue reading

Oaken Grove Park - Bird and Bat Boxes Installed!
by Dave Duncan, about 1 year agoOaken Grove Park - Now ready for Springwatch 2025! We had a Bird survey and also a Bat Survey of the park done in 2024. This identified a number of suitable locations for bird/bat boxes and also what capacity the park could take and of what types. We've now installed 12 bird boxes and 4 bat boxes ready for this spring. These are 4 Blue Tit boxes, 5 Great Tit boxes, 1 Robin box, 1 Sparrow Terrace and 1 Starling box. The 4 bat boxes are 3 roosting boxes and one maternity box. In order to not damage the trees... Continue reading

In order to not damage the trees we have decided not to use aluminum nails and instead have experimented with new ways of attaching the boxes using velcro strips for the bat boxes and stainless steel wire for the bird boxes. The boxes will be monitored and cleaned out each autumn.
