Maidenhead Tai Chi Community Group - Developing a Tai Chi Push Hands Program for Community Health

    by MaidenheadTaiChiCommunityGroup, 2 months ago

The number of members attending our Tai Chi sessions has grown more quickly than anticipated. While this is very encouraging, it means we have needed to secure a larger venue to ensure the continued health, safety, and comfort of all participants.

We are pleased to announce that, effective from 28 May, our second Tai Chi group has relocated from the United Reformed Church to Maidenhead Community Centre. The new venue provides a more spacious and comfortable environment, enabling us to accommodate our growing membership while continuing to deliver enjoyable and safe Tai Chi sessions for everyone.

We’re working to reduce mental & physical health inequalities for young people in Maidenhead and Windsor 💬💪

So far, 18 young people have taken part in mentoring, workshops, and wellbeing activities designed to build confidence, resilience, and everyday coping skills—especially for those facing barriers to support.

While early attendance has been lower than expected, we’re strengthening our outreach by working directly with schools, youth spaces, and the community. We’re also introducing peer ambassadors to help spread the word and reduce stigma around mental health.

Our goal: create accessible, culturally sensitive support that truly meets young people where they are 🌍... Continue reading

St. Andrew's Church in Wraysbury was filled with music and flowers on April 26th. Bells rang out across the neighbourhood to welcome the 70 guests to our Spring Concert. Music ranged from classical to pop from the organ, piano and harp, with songs ranging from a cockney knees up, through musical theatre to the Beatles....what an evening!

"When is the next one?" we were constantly asked....well, it's Sunday November 15th so keep an eye out for info......

The Bridging Hearts project continues to provide vital support to 22 vulnerable and older BAME women living in the Maidenhead and Windsor Borough who are experiencing loneliness and social isolation.

With the onset of warmer weather, project activities have successfully transitioned from the community centre to a local community park. This change has created a more accessible and informal setting, encouraging greater participation and engagement.

Many of the women involved in the project live alone, have limited English proficiency, or face cultural and financial barriers that restrict their involvement in mainstream social activities. The outdoor sessions have provided an inclusive space where participants can connect, build relationships, and enjoy shared experiences.

In particular, the recent Saturday gathering demonstrated the positive impact of the project, with participants actively engaging in conversation, social interaction, and enjoying the benefits of being outdoors in a supportive group environment.

Over the past few months, we’ve run a series of arts and crafts sessions in our charity shop. These have given people a simple, welcoming space to get involved in creative activities and meet others.

The relaxed setting has made it easy for people to drop in and take part at their own pace. They’ve also brought more people into the shop and created a positive, friendly atmosphere and some beautiful art!

In April, the sun was shining, and at Datchet Village Hall we were able to use the outdoor gym equipment, giving women the confidence that they can access local facilities and stay fit. Empowering women to take stock of their health and know that keep fit spaces in the community are available free of charge. We continue to build strength and resilience together.

This week, we were lucky to have wonderful weather. After the practice of Tai Chi, some of our members took the opportunity to arrange a group walk around Maidenhead. We had lunch in the pub and enjoyed some good chat. Beautiful weather, beautiful flowers, and beautiful food as well!

EmpowHER is about more than exercise. It’s about confidence, connection, and creating a space where women can prioritise their health together. Thank you to every woman who continues to show up and support one another.

During Ramadan, attendance dipped slightly, but the sense of community remained strong. Our partnership with Datchet PCNS has also been a powerful referral source. Recently, a support worker brought along a young person who was overjoyed to take part, embracing the opportunity to exercise and connect with other women.

Together, we’re building strength, confidence, and meaningful conversations.

A few months ago, we were invited by Nicholsons Centre Maidenhead to perform a Tai Chi demonstration, which generated a lot of interest and led to our return last week.

During this session, we progressed from single-hand to double-hand push hands. Single-hand practice reinforced sensitivity, relaxation, and structure, while double-hand patterns introduced greater complexity, requiring improved coordination, balance, and whole-body connection.
